Why study Geography?

Geography will help you understand the world around you; the landscape (physical geography), the people (human geography) and how one may affect the other, sometimes in quite spectacular ways. Employers and universities know that geography students develop a wide range of transferable skills; not just map skills but also things like fieldwork, teamwork, literacy and analytical skills.

Students wanting to directly use geography have gone on to the following areas of work: Environment Agency, flood defence, town planning, ecological conservation, marketing and business consultancy, law, meteorology, economic development, health careers, international development aid organisations and teaching!

What will I study?

We cover a wide range of topics to enable you to be well informed on all sorts of current issues, including: natural hazards, ecosystems, UK landscapes, urban development, economic activity and the challenge of resource management.

How will I study?

Geography is a subject that can use a wide range of learning styles. Visual, logical and verbal skills are used all the time. We try to fit in discussion and consider opinions, to help you develop confidence with the issues we study (intra- and interpersonal skills). You will develop map skills, analyse photos and learn to interpret the world around you, using ICT and a range of fieldwork skills.

There is one day of compulsory fieldwork required for this course.

How will my work be assessed?

In total there are 3 AQA exams:

• Paper 1: Physical Geography - 35%
• Paper 2: Human Geography - 35%
• Paper 3: Geographical Applications (skills and fieldwork) - 30%
