We celebrated this year’s World Book Day at Brightwell cum Sotwell CofE Primary School with a jam-packed week of events!

We kicked off the week by welcoming our friends from The Wallingford Bookshop. They held a book fair in school, giving the children the opportunity to buy some wonderful new books. In return, we received 20 books to add to our school library for everyone to enjoy.

Wallingford Library kindly hosted our Reception and Key Stage 1 children for an afternoon. The children listened to a fabulous story, then had the chance to browse the shelves and borrow some books to read in class.

We were lucky enough to secure a visit from author and poet James Carter. After a madcap assembly to launch the event (including, to the children’s great delight, the staff team performing Dance of the Dung Beetle), James worked with each of our classes, sharing his techniques for writing simple yet effective poetry. Children shared the poems they had written in our final assembly - a huge thank you to James for a truly awesome day!

World Book Day itself was fun all the way – from the traditional ‘character catwalk’, where all the children got to ‘strut their stuff’ and show off the incredible array of costumes, to the Battle of the Books (won by The Worrysaurus) and the Masked Reader, where the children had to guess which member of staff was reading one of their favourite books.

We are passionate about instilling a love of reading at Brightwell – it opens up so many different worlds for children to explore – and we made sure everyone had a week to remember!
