Two years ago, Martin from Architecture Workshops visited Brightwell School to lead an exciting day of architecture, and the children had such a fantastic time that we were delighted to be able to invite him back again this term, this time with funding generously provided by Merchant Taylor's Company.

Designed to enhance the curriculum and providing support for teachers by linking the key subject areas, Maths, Science and Literacy with Design Technology, History and Humanities, the workshops gave the children the chance to explore STEM in a creative and collaborative way.

On this occasion, Martin worked with our Reception children as well as Years 3 and 6, bringing fresh inspiration and hands-on learning to each group.

No matter their age, every child's session began with the same simple materials: sets of bamboo canes and elastic bands. Martin then taught them how to bind these together in different ways, unlocking the potential to create a range of wonderful structures:

  • Reception children worked brilliantly as a team to build a huge pyramid.
  • Year 3 pupils took on the challenge of reconstructing the iconic Crystal Palace.
  • Year 6 enjoyed all the fun of the fair by designing and building a working Ferris Wheel!

The workshops not only sparked imagination but also encouraged problem-solving, teamwork, and resilience. It was amazing to see children of all ages engaged, motivated, and proud of what they achieved.
